What Is SC Clearance and How Long Does It Take?

SC (Security Check) clearance explained: what it grants access to, the checks involved, how long it typically takes to obtain, how long it lasts, and who is eligible.

SC (Security Check) clearance is one of the most common levels of UK national security vetting and the one most often requested by defence employers. It allows long-term, frequent and uncontrolled access to information classified as SECRET, plus occasional supervised access to TOP SECRET. Obtaining it typically takes around 6 to 12 weeks once your application is submitted, though this varies widely with your personal circumstances and current vetting backlogs. SC is managed by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and must be sponsored by an employer, and you cannot apply for it independently.

What SC clearance allows you to do

SC is the standard requirement for posts that need regular access to SECRET assets, and it covers a huge range of defence and government work: engineers, software developers, project and programme managers, analysts and consultants on classified contracts. It is held across the Ministry of Defence, major defence primes, and the wide network of contractors that work on government programmes (the companies formerly listed as “List X”, now described as holding Facility Security Clearance).

What checks are involved

SC builds on the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), which must be completed first. On top of that, UKSV carries out:

  • a security questionnaire completed by you;
  • a departmental or company records check;
  • checks of both spent and unspent criminal records;
  • a credit and financial history check with a credit reference agency;
  • a check of Security Service records.

An interview is not a standard part of SC: it is only requested if specific concerns are raised, or if recommended by the Security Service. If there are financial questions, you may be asked to complete a separate financial questionnaire so a fuller review can be carried out. Checks can extend to third parties named on your questionnaire.

How long does SC clearance take?

There is no guaranteed processing time, and UKSV does not publish a binding service-level commitment. As a working guide:

  • Straightforward cases are often completed in around 6 to 12 weeks; some recruiters report turnarounds as quick as 4 to 6 weeks when documentation is complete and there is no complex overseas history.
  • More complex cases (significant time spent abroad, extensive financial history, or periods that are hard to verify) can take considerably longer, and processing has at times been slowed by vetting backlogs.

The single biggest thing within your control is the quality of your application. Submit accurate, complete information first time, keep a clear record of your address and employment history, and respond quickly to any follow-up requests.

How long does SC clearance last?

Cabinet Office policy is that SC is formally reviewed at least every 10 years (every 7 years for some non-Facility-Security-Clearance contractors). The risk owner can review a clearance sooner, and some categories of staff are issued shorter clearances. SC is not automatically transferable between organisations, so moving employer may require transfer, revalidation, or in some cases a fresh application, and a gap of around a year or more out of cleared work often means starting again.

Who is eligible for SC?

SC does not carry a blanket British-citizenship requirement at the UKSV level, but residency matters because the checks need a verifiable history: a minimum of around five years of continuous UK residency is commonly expected. Non-UK and dual nationals can and do hold SC, though additional scrutiny may apply. Importantly, individual roles and employers set their own nationality rules on top of the clearance itself: some defence posts (especially those touching export-controlled or ITAR material) require sole UK nationality.

SC vs DV: what’s the difference?

SC covers SECRET with occasional TOP SECRET access; DV (Developed Vetting) is the higher level for frequent, uncontrolled TOP SECRET access. DV adds a full financial review, a detailed personal interview and referee interviews, and takes far longer to obtain. Read What is DV clearance? for the comparison.
