About the Role
As an Application & Systems Engineer at BAE Systems, you will be instrumental in providing comprehensive support and maintenance for a range of business-critical applications and systems. Your responsibilities will encompass troubleshooting issues, assisting users, and ensuring the reliable delivery of services. This role involves the installation, configuration, and upkeep of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) applications, often in collaboration with software vendors and third-party suppliers.
You will be a key contributor to the support of server and database environments, actively participating in incident resolution, managing service requests, and contributing to project activities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop technical expertise across a broad spectrum of technologies, from established systems to emerging solutions, making it ideal for an adaptable engineer with a diverse technical skillset.
Core Duties
- Provide user-focused application support, developing a strong understanding of business processes and system workflows to effectively assist end users.
- Configure, maintain, and administer enterprise applications to ensure they consistently meet operational business needs throughout their lifecycle.
- Contribute relevant technical knowledge across servers, networks, applications, and underlying technologies to support incident, request, and project workstreams, informing design decisions and technical outcomes.
- Act as a flexible technical contributor, supporting a mix of operational support and project-based activities across both established and emerging technologies.
- Document system processes, procedures, and configurations to capture and maintain knowledge, supporting consistent operations and future improvements.
- Support 'run and maintain' activities across the estate, including server updates, managing application patches, and ensuring systems remain secure, stable, and aligned with operational and governance requirements.
Essential Skills
- Experience working with and writing queries within Relational Database Management Systems (Microsoft SQL Server / Oracle Databases).
- Experience with 1st and 2nd line support of enterprise applications, supporting varying sizes of customer/user deployments.
- Experience working within and configuring Server Operating systems such as Linux and Windows Server 2019+ with knowledge of command line/programming languages (batch, PowerShell etc.) and other related protocols & technologies (SFTP, SSH, SCP).
- Good understanding of application support principles, including issue triage, root cause analysis, and user-focused resolution.
