Rolls‑Royce Submarines is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the Facility Safety Case Owner (FSCO) team at their Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE) in Thurso, United Kingdom.
This role is crucial for supporting our nuclear facilities and maintaining a robust safety envelope. You will contribute to the safe operation of systems, structures, and components, ensuring the successful delivery of key site programmes.

As part of our nuclear business, a leader in propulsion system design for the Royal Navy's submarine fleet, you will work within a team of safety case professionals, reporting to the Vulcan Chief Engineer. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in the nuclear industry while contributing to significant ongoing programmes.
Key Accountabilities:
- Assist the FSCO in maintaining a safe envelope and providing safety oversight for nuclear facilities and key site programmes.
- Ensure that all safety implications are thoroughly considered and that changes are appropriately sponsored and approved through established site due process.
- Optimize facility operations to comply with the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle.
- Provide practical and technical advice regarding site safety management arrangements, facility, and process safety cases, incorporating enterprise and industry best practices.
- Provide cover for the FSCO, requiring comparative qualification to the FSCO level.
Position Qualifications:
- Essential experience working within an engineering discipline.
- Degree qualified in an engineering or science-based subject, or equivalent relevant industry experience. Experience in the nuclear industry or another highly regulated environment is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience and a good understanding of safety case production, development, and review.
- Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to engage confidently with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
- Ability to write well-structured reports presenting clear arguments and sound recommendations.
- Enthusiastic, motivated, and committed to driving continuous improvement in challenging environments.
- Good project management skills.
- Professional registration through a recognised institute is desirable.
