Electro-Optic Systems Engineer - Future Seekers Team
Leonardo UK is seeking a motivated Electro-Optic Systems Engineer to join our Future Seekers Team. This team is dedicated to the rapid development and maturation of seeker technologies, aiming to reach Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5) for prototype demonstrators. Our work encompasses a wide range of activities including concept development, performance modelling, algorithm development, software, hardware, and firmware engineering, through to systems integration and testing.
As an Electro-Optic Systems Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in leading the integration and testing of EO seeker prototypes. You will collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines to bring technology prototypes to life. Your responsibilities will include leading the specification, development, and involvement in system testing. A key aspect of this role involves liaising with, and potentially contributing to the design alongside, experts in sub-system areas such as electronics, software, firmware, and mechanical engineering. This position is also an excellent opportunity for individuals from an applications background looking to gain exposure to research and pursue a more theoretical career path.
Day-to-day duties will include:
- Contribution to the generation of new seeker concepts.
- Generation of system and sub-systems requirements.
- Working with test engineers to characterise performance.
- Algorithm development and data analysis.
- Participation in trials activities.
What you’ll bring:
We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds who possess:
- Proven experience in Electro-Optics system development and integration.
- An engineering or science-based Honours degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- An electronic engineering background with an understanding of passive and active EO systems.
- Systems engineering experience, or a strong aspiration to move into systems engineering with mentoring.
We are seeking Systems Engineers with applied engineering experience, rather than deep theoretical knowledge, whom we can support and develop through training, teamwork, and mentoring.
Essential Specialisms:
- Electronic engineering
- Electro-optic systems
Desirable Experience/Skills:
- Working on integration programmes, managing issues related to cost, schedule, and quality.
- Experience of sensor performance modelling and image analysis.
- Software development in MATLAB or Python.
- Practitioner-level ability using Model Driven Engineering tools (e.g., Simulink, DOORS classic).
- Relevant experience in RF or EE sensor systems.
- Understanding of complex weapons systems employment.
We encourage applications even if you do not meet every requirement. A positive attitude and a willingness to learn are our most valued attributes.
Security Clearance:
This role requires pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, potentially including eligibility for Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
