About the Role
Join BAE Systems as an Electronics Design Authority / Principal/Senior Electronics Engineer and play a pivotal role in the development of high-integrity electronic systems. You will be involved across the entire engineering lifecycle, from initial concept generation through to integration, rigorous testing, and ongoing in-service support. This dynamic position blends practical, hands-on electronics design with significant technical leadership responsibilities, with a particular focus on FPGA (VHDL) development and system/subsystem-level integration.
You will act as the design authority within your specialised area, ensuring that all designs are technically robust, adhere to required standards, and are supported by comprehensive evidence demonstrating safety, compliance, and optimal performance. Your responsibilities will include guiding key design decisions, actively participating in engineering reviews, and maintaining technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle. This includes managing technology upgrades and addressing obsolescence issues.
Furthermore, you will collaborate closely with diverse multidisciplinary teams, providing essential support for integration efforts, problem-solving, and successful delivery across multiple challenging projects.
Core Duties
- Lead the design and development of electronic subsystems and systems from concept through to service release and ongoing support, providing crucial technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers.
- Apply strong experience in component-level electronic design using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, supporting both new designs for production and the maintenance of existing products, including obsolescence management and technology upgrades.
- Design and analyse electronic circuits, encompassing analogue-to-digital (ADC/DAC) conversion and integration, power supply design and decoupling, and supporting EMC-compliant subsystem and PCB development.
- Ensure all designs meet stringent safety and regulatory requirements, particularly in high power or high voltage environments.
- Support design proving, system integration, and testing phases, including the investigation and resolution of technical issues and defects.
- Produce clear, concise technical documentation and evidence to demonstrate safety, compliance, and overall fitness for purpose, drawing on knowledge of FPGA design, power electronics, and test and measurement techniques.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven experience leading electronic hardware design from concept through to release and in-service support.
- Strong technical leadership capability, including experience mentoring engineers and providing design authority.
- Significant experience in design verification, integration, defect resolution, and generating acceptance evidence.
- Solid understanding of product safety and integrity, with specific knowledge of power electronics and power supply considerations.
- Experience working collaboratively with PCB designers on EMC aware layout, component selection, and obsolescence management.
- Proficiency in FPGA design and implementation.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Electronic Engineering or a strongly related subject.
About the Team
The Underwater electronics team is responsible for the complete lifecycle of electronics, from initial concept, design, and manufacture through to production and in-service support. This includes ensuring long-term capability through effective obsolescence management, technology insertion, and continuous improvement of system and subsystem performance.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on technically challenging systems that have a tangible real-world impact. You will be joining an experienced team of engineers in a collaborative and supportive environment.
