Mechanical or Chemical Engineer Opportunities

Babcock is seeking Mechanical or Chemical Engineers to join our Nuclear Engineering Group at the historic Devonport Royal Dockyard. This is a crucial role within Babcock’s Devonport Naval Nuclear sector, contributing to the design, modification, and through-life support of fixed, portable, and temporary pressure systems and associated equipment. These systems are vital for submarine interfaces and support activities such as system testing, commissioning, temperature and chemistry control, and radioactive waste management.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include authoring design documentation, creating Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and drawings, performing engineering analyses, and providing expert technical advice to ensure strict adherence to nuclear regulations and pressure system standards. You will work within an agile and collaborative environment designed to foster career progression and professional development.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead or collaborate within engineering teams to plan, organise, and deliver design tasks.
  • Develop and deliver designs throughout all lifecycle phases, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Address emergent operational issues by providing problem-solving and technical solutions.
  • Perform and lead quality checks on all engineering outputs.

This role is based onsite at Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth, with a minimum of 3 days per week required onsite. Hybrid working arrangements are available.

What you’ll need:

  • Experience in mechanical, chemical, or process engineering.
  • Knowledge of piping/pressure systems and components.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with engineering regulations and standards.
  • Understanding of the full design lifecycle.
  • Experience in CAD, component engineering simulation, system fluid flow analysis, or nuclear plant design is advantageous.
  • Minimum HNC qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • A degree qualification and professional registration with a relevant engineering institution are preferred for more senior positions.
  • A strong drive to own and shape your career development journey.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national and will be required to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance.

Please note that many positions within Babcock are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. Eligibility may be affected by factors such as place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and residency status.
