About the Role: Flight Systems Engineer

As a Flight Systems Engineer at BAE Systems, you will play a crucial role in the design, development, and ongoing support of key aircraft systems. This includes critical components such as landing gear, fuel systems, electrical power generation, environmental control systems, flight controls, and propulsion integration. You will be involved throughout the entire engineering lifecycle, from the initial capture of requirements and detailed design, through to manufacturing support and in-service operations. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure to a wide array of engineering tasks and to develop deep technical expertise within Flight Systems, all within a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of comprehensive engineering activities across the complete product lifecycle, encompassing requirements development, system and equipment design, modelling and analysis, rigorous testing, integration, qualification, and certification processes.
  • Contribute to the development and support of aircraft flight systems, engaging with mechanical, electrical, and fluid disciplines to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Provide essential technical support to both internal and external customers, proactively investigating and resolving engineering issues to guarantee effective system performance.
  • Offer support to manufacturing and build-line activities, identifying and adeptly resolving technical challenges as they emerge to maintain project momentum.
  • Produce and meticulously maintain Flight Systems engineering documentation and technical data, ensuring strict adherence to project requirements, industry standards, and organisational procedures.
  • Utilise advanced engineering analysis and modelling tools to accurately assess system performance, providing critical support for design and development activities.
  • Collaborate closely with diverse multidisciplinary engineering teams and project stakeholders to develop and implement innovative engineering solutions.
  • Support multiple projects and a variety of aircraft platforms, ensuring the successful delivery of work packages within agreed quality, cost, and schedule parameters.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Possession of an HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification and/or practical experience in a relevant STEM discipline, such as Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Demonstrable experience working within the aerospace industry or a similarly complex, technology-focused engineering environment.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills, with a proven ability to research, interpret, and apply system design data to effectively address complex engineering challenges.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office applications and the capacity to quickly learn and utilize specialist engineering tools and software.
  • Experience in supporting the design, development, analysis, integration, or support of complex engineering systems.
  • A solid understanding of engineering lifecycles and fundamental systems engineering principles.

About the Team:

Join our dedicated Flight Systems Engineering team, based in Filton. You will be instrumental in supporting the development and sustainment of some of the world's most advanced military aircraft platforms. Working across significant programmes including Typhoon, Tornado, Hawk, and F-35, the team provides specialised engineering expertise across a wide spectrum of mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems. Your contributions will be vital in maintaining and enhancing aircraft capability throughout their entire lifecycle.

Location and Working Arrangements:

This role is based in Filton and operates on a hybrid model, requiring three days per week onsite. BAE Systems offers a range of flexible and hybrid working arrangements, and prospective candidates are encouraged to discuss specific options with their recruiter for this particular position.
