Group Lead & Head of Site - Shoeburyness

We are seeking a dynamic Group Lead & Head of Site to join our team at the Shoeburyness facility. This is a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and collaborate with brilliant minds in a vital sector.

As the Group Lead & Head of Site, you will be the key individual responsible for ensuring the leadership and availability of our Shoeburyness facilities to meet the demands of the Weapons Services Integrated Delivery Team and the broader UK Defence business. You will serve as a senior leader, fostering a positive, engaging, and collaborative environment. Acting on behalf of the Operations Director, you will oversee health & safety, environment, and security, acting as local representation for QinetiQ and ensuring a Safe System of Work is in place for all trials and activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Head of Site on behalf of the Operations Director, serving as a focal point for enabling delivery at Shoeburyness.
  • Serve as the Providing Manager signatory, ensuring all activities delivered by the Shoeburyness team are safe, secure, and compliant with QinetiQ and relevant external policies and regulations.
  • Ensure that all Shoeburyness facilities operate efficiently, effectively, consistently, and compliantly with relevant policies, procedures, and local work instructions within the QinetiQ Operating Frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the relevant IDT and the wider business to develop and implement a strategy for sustaining and growing operations in line with business demands, covering people, equipment, technology, and processes.
  • Interpret Land and Weapons strategy, aims, and intent, as well as business goals, translating strategy and objectives into practical application.
  • Lead a culture of continuous improvement to enhance the agility, capacity, efficiency, and quality of Shoeburyness facilities, providing financial management as per delegated authority and ensuring budgets are in place.

Essential Experience:

  • Extensive experience working in an environmental test domain with a tangible record of achievement.
  • Extensive operational experience, ideally managing teams in a high hazard facility or environment.
  • Previous experience developing and line managing others, and building effective teams in a matrix management, technical environment to meet specific and challenging objectives.
  • Proven capability in Process Improvement and Change Management.
  • Deep understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and practices, with a drive to promote these to others.
  • Experience in TERP (Test, Evaluation, Research and Proof) Range Operations is desirable.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A first degree in Science, Operations, or Engineering, or an equivalent nationally recognised qualification.

QinetiQ Shoeburyness is a significant test and evaluation facility specialising in defence and security technologies. The site focuses on Environmental Testing, including the evaluation of various ordnance, explosives, and related systems, while implementing measures to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimise ecological impact.
