Join BAE Systems and become a key player in delivering cutting-edge software solutions for mission-critical hardware systems. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will contribute to complex aerospace and defence products, working across the full product lifecycle from initial requirements capture and design through to development, integration, verification, and ongoing support.

You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of experienced software engineers, systems engineers, hardware engineers, and test teams. Together, you will contribute to the development of sophisticated real-world systems that are designed to perform reliably in demanding operational environments.

Core Duties:

  • Develop, test, and maintain software solutions in line with project requirements, quality standards, and agreed schedules.
  • Complete allocated requirements, design, implementation, and verification tasks, producing appropriate technical documentation throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support system integration, verification, and validation activities, working closely with software, systems, hardware, and test engineers.
  • Follow established engineering processes, software development best practices, and configuration management procedures.
  • Participate in peer reviews, provide regular progress updates, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering team.

Essential Skills:

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, with strong software engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, C#, or Ada.
  • Exposure to embedded software development through academic projects, placements, internships, or commercial experience.
  • An understanding of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.
  • Awareness of requirements capture and traceability principles; knowledge of tools such as DOORS is advantageous.
  • Ability to use initiative, adapt to changing priorities, and work effectively in a dynamic engineering environment with a proactive and creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, combined with a willingness to learn, develop new technical skills, and contribute within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
