Role Overview

The Lead Project Manager is responsible for managing small projects or defined work packages within larger programmes. Your primary focus will be ensuring project delivery aligns with agreed objectives, timelines, and budgets. You will apply appropriate project management methods, oversee planning, reporting, risk management, and stakeholder engagement. Furthermore, you will support the integration of project activities to drive effective outcomes, provide guidance on Project Management (PM) practices, contribute informed analysis to support decision-making, and promote knowledge sharing, all while delivering results with minimal supervision.

Core Duties:

  • Undertake advanced problem solving, typically based on previous experience.
  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of business processes and procedures.
  • Lead a small project or a work package of a larger project.
  • Identify, assess, and manage risks and opportunities impacting project success.
  • Apply appropriate PM methods and tools, whether predictive (plan-driven) or adaptive (iterative/agile) approaches.
  • Agree project approach with stakeholders, develop realistic plans, and track delivery against schedule while managing stakeholder engagement.
  • Consolidate expertise from multiple sources, including third-party experts, to provide coherent advice furthering organisational objectives.
  • Support and promote the development and sharing of specialist knowledge within the organisation.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Hold a PM Qualification such as the APM Project Management Qualification or another appropriate PM professional body.
  • Possess a university degree or equivalent qualification, or demonstrable practical knowledge gained through relevant experience.
  • Application of related PM competencies is expected at this level.
  • Exhibit strong stakeholder management skills, effective verbal and written communication, and problem-solving capability.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of delivery.

The Engineering Project Group (EPG)

You will be part of the Engineering Project Group (EPG), which leads the delivery of a high-profile capability upgrade to the Type 45 Destroyer. As a multidisciplinary team, the EPG is responsible for planning, design, and execution, coordinating stakeholders, managing budgets and schedules, and ensuring technical quality, safety, compliance, and effective risk management across the full project lifecycle.

Location and Working Arrangements

This role is based at Portsmouth Naval Base, with an expectation of 2-3 days per week on site. BAE Systems offers a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements; please discuss the options for this particular role with your recruiter.
