Lead Systems Engineer / Design Authority

Leonardo is seeking a highly skilled Lead Systems Engineer / Design Authority to provide crucial technical oversight and expertise across the entire engineering lifecycle. You will be instrumental in ensuring that complex system solutions are developed and delivered to meet all customer, user, and business requirements, working collaboratively with internal and supplier design teams.

This hybrid role is based at our dedicated site in Basildon, Essex, and is part of the Crenic project team, contributing to life-saving protection for the UK military within our Land Cyber & Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) sector. You will be a key member of a multi-disciplined team, driving the integrity and compliance of system and subsystem designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical oversight and expertise at all levels of the overall system solution.
  • Ensure system and subsystem designs are fit for purpose, compliant with requirements, and maintain safety.
  • Work closely with the System Design Authority (SDA) to identify and resolve technical issues and ensure solution integrity.
  • Deputise for the SDA within the project and lead the architecture team in documenting architecture throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Influence requirements to enable informed design and development decisions, and provide direction on technical risks and opportunities.
  • Support test planning, requirements verification, and present architecture material at internal and external Design Reviews.
  • Act as a technical interface between the end customer and the Leonardo Engineering team, and support the guidance of junior engineers.
  • Travel within the UK to meet with customers and industry partners.

What You'll Bring:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in a STEM subject with strong numerical, analytical, and design skills.
  • Strong understanding of system and project lifecycles, system architecture, and change control.
  • Proven ability to influence system design and integration of major systems.
  • Strong stakeholder management experience with organisations and customers, particularly in high-pressure environments.
  • Experience successfully passing Design Reviews and implementing remedial actions with suppliers and integration teams.
  • Self-motivated with a strong aptitude for problem-solving and decision-making.

Desirable Experience:

  • Knowledge of military Force Protection Electronic Counter Measures (FPECM) systems.
  • Strong understanding of systems integration and progressive assurance.
  • Experience of making design decisions by trading-off alternate solutions based on functionality, performance, and cost.
  • Chartered Engineer status / member of the IET.

Security Clearance:

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and The Security Check (SC).

Salary Range:

£75,000 - £91,000 per annum.
