Mechanical Design Engineer – Mechanical Systems
Join BAE Systems and become part of a team dedicated to pioneering progress and protecting what matters most. As a Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in Mechanical Systems, you will be instrumental in delivering advanced, technology-led defence solutions.
In this role, you will undertake a defined range of detail design activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements, supplying advice and support to operations and other functions. This will be achieved by ensuring defined objectives are met whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.
Core Duties:
- Conduct on-board ship trials and surveys, communicating effectively with other departments, Design Services disciplines, customers, and suppliers.
- Carry out technical investigations into operational problems or developments, developing and preparing solutions, individually or as part of a team.
- Support the development of best practice to enhance the capability and performance of tools and processes.
- Produce technical drawing guidance packages, detail parts lists, and inventories using AutoCAD / Inventor design software.
- Represent the Mechanical / Piping team at various project design reviews for the tasks you are working on or supporting colleagues on other platform tasks.
- Utilize various internal and external customer-driven databases to source information.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD / Inventor (2D/3D, AutoDesk, Foran) design, demonstrated through the production of detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
- Understanding of detailed system and technical engineering drawings, including manufacturing drawings, with knowledge of projection layouts, scaling, and tolerancing. This includes familiarity with ship system engineering drawings such as P&IDs, diagrammatics, and piping isometrics, as well as ship systems materials and equipment symbols.
- Knowledge of maritime warship / commercial systems, including fluid-based and mechanical systems. Ability to perform basic pressure loss and flow calculations for pipework sizing.
- Familiarity with Mechanical manufacturing processes.
- Understanding of Mechanical ship systems (build or in service), with experience in RN surface ship standards and governance.
The Design Services Team:
The Design Services Team is the BAE Systems Maritime ‘in service’ technical support cell located within Portsmouth Naval Base. We employ approximately 180 personnel across various disciplines, including Mechanical, Electrical & Combat Systems (ECS), Structures / Outfit (S&O), and HVAC. Our team creates modification design packages and reports for installation and integration on legacy warships, working collaboratively with our Safety section and Naval Architects.
