The Role: Mechanical Design Engineer

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering robust mechanical design solutions and taking ownership of their successful implementation. Your role will involve thoroughly exploring and testing problem spaces before generating hardware solutions. You will be expected to confidently present your ideas at design reviews and critiques, leveraging the expertise of senior team members as needed.

Day-to-day, this role supports our expanding hydrodynamic model testing capabilities. This involves designing, developing, and manufacturing bespoke models to tight tolerances, which are then tested in our world-class facilities.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Reviews: Lead formal design reviews, articulate design concepts with confidence, present at design critique sessions, and chair engineering reviews with Manufacturing and Procurement teams.
  • Delivery: Balance competing requirements to deliver optimal solutions, influence stakeholders to refine customer needs, and clearly communicate assumptions, exclusions, risks, and controls throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Technical: Design complex systems and components for test or operational use. Independently inspect work against defined standards and apply measurement-based, scientific thinking to problem-solving.
  • Governance: Contribute actively to FMEA and HazID activities, compile compliance evidence, and support formal demonstrations of compliance.

Essential Experience:

  • Understanding and experience in Hazard Identification, Safety Cases & Safety Management systems.
  • Application of Analytical, Simulation, and Modelling Techniques.
  • Knowledge of Materials Selection, Coatings & Corrosion.
  • Experience in Concept Design & Development.
  • Experience designing technical hardware solutions, ideally from regulated industries requiring complex problem-solving or precision tolerances.
  • Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D Models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts (ideally using SolidWorks).

Essential Qualifications:

  • HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or Product Design (or equivalent experience).
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals, with formal training or experience in areas such as materials, stress awareness, mechanism designs, design principles, and electrical awareness.
  • Should have achieved CEng level against the UK SPEC and be a member of a recognised professional institution.

Location and Hours:

This role is based at our Gosport site, with 37 hours per week and an average site attendance of three days per week.

Our state-of-the-art facilities at Haslar, including our ocean basin with a rotating arm and a marine towing tank, provide an exceptional environment for testing and refining designs. We offer global customers services for constrained hydrodynamic model tests of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.
