Airbus Netherlands B.V. is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Design & Analysis Engineering Team in Leiden, The Netherlands. This role is crucial to our ongoing contributions to the international Space industry, particularly in the areas of Solar Arrays, Launcher Structures, and Laser Satellite Communication, where we aim to maintain world-leading expertise.

About the Role:

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for the mechanical analysis and verification of complex structures for the Ariane 6 launcher. Your work will involve Finite Element modeling to ensure all customer technical requirements are met, in close collaboration with Lead and Systems Engineers, Thermal Engineering, the Design Office, the Material & Process department, the Assembly & Integration Team, and fellow mechanical engineers.

Your Challenges:

  • Understand and design lightweight metallic structures subjected to complex mechanical loading.
  • Perform Finite Element Modeling and analysis of Airbus Netherlands B.V. Space products, specifically the lightweight structures of the Ariane 6 launcher, using FEMAP and NASTRAN.
  • Model and analyze the performance of structural components and assemblies, optimizing for mass, cost, and production/assembly requirements while ensuring the highest product safety.
  • Define, execute, and report on tests for the qualification of structures, subcomponents, or processes.
  • Liaise with the Design Office, manufacturing engineers, the Assembly, Testing and Integration team, and other relevant Airbus departments to develop optimal design solutions.
  • Participate in and/or provide technical support during Design Reviews.
  • Select appropriate materials and processes for each design element in collaboration with the Materials & Processes Engineering Team.
  • Ensure final designs can withstand mechanical stresses and meet required stiffness and fracture control specifications.
  • Manage broad objectives within agreed deadlines, establishing necessary tasks and their completion methods.
  • Effectively report engineering work in technical documents suitable for configuration control, design reviews, handling of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) during production, customer inquiries, and future development.

Your Boarding Pass:

  • Masters Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical) with a strong emphasis on structural analysis or lightweight structures.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer, preferably in the aerospace sector. Experience with mechanical design, verification, and understanding of lightweight structures is advantageous.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience using the Finite Element Method.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience using FEMAP and NASTRAN.
  • Experience working with ABAQUS.
  • In-depth knowledge of linear and nonlinear mechanics.
  • Experience in mechanical testing and qualification campaigns, including reporting.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with ECSS, NASM, and ASTM standards.
  • Nice-to-have: In-depth knowledge of (aerospace) manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of Python and VBA programming.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of statistics, machine learning, and AI.
  • Nice-to-have: A PhD, preferably in structural engineering and design.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of MSC Nastran Implicit Non-Linear (SOL 400) Analysis.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of CATIA or similar CAD programs.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Capability to solve complex problems independently, even without a predefined approach.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, & PowerPoint) required.
  • Nice-to-have: Proficiency with Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • A team player with a positive and collaborative attitude.
  • Good interpersonal skills, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Demonstrated high-level problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills in English (verbal and written).
  • Conversational Dutch is a plus, but not required.
  • Availability for 1 FTE, preferably starting as soon as possible.
  • Residency in the Netherlands.
  • A VOG (certificate of good behavior) and background screening are part of the procedure.
