About the Role

As a Mechanical Engineer for the Sting Ray program at BAE Systems, you will be involved in a critical technical role focused on the electro-mechanical aspects of hardware obsolescence and design. You will provide essential support to the Return to Manufacture Lead Engineer and the Sting Ray Mod-2 teams, contributing to the advancement of underwater weapon systems.

Core Responsibilities

  • Under technical supervision, collaborate with the Sting Ray Mod 2 (SRM2) Design Team to ensure design alignment across Sting Ray Mid Life Upgrade and SRM2 All Up Round, minimising standard differences.
  • Support the resolution of obsolescence in legacy elements of the SRM2 torpedo through new design, procurement, and component certification activities.
  • Work closely with the supply chain to reinstate the manufacture and procurement of legacy elements of the SRM2 torpedo.
  • Assist with internal and supplier verification activities through analysis, inspection, and testing, including support for environmental qualification and product installation.
  • Generate technical reports, design documents, specifications, and release artefacts necessary for hardware procurement and progression through design gates.
  • Contribute to the identification and closure of issues arising from all product lifecycle stages and manage the resulting change embodiment activities.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of theories and concepts within an engineering discipline area, gained through professional qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with engineering approaches, processes, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering principles and approaches underpinning the design and development of assemblies, systems, sub-systems, and services.
  • Experience in understanding designs engineered for manufacturability, quality, and seamless transition into full-scale production environments.

The Sting Ray Return to Manufacturing Team

You will be joining a dedicated team focused on underwater weapons, playing a vital role in delivering upgrades and re-designs to the Sting Ray weapon system. The team is actively involved in activities throughout the All Up Round, collaborating with technical experts, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain to resolve obsolescence and technical issues within the SRM2 system.
