Mechanical Fitter Opportunities
At Babcock, we are seeking talented individuals to join us as Mechanical Fitters at the historic Devonport Royal Dockyard. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to national security by working on a wide range of projects, assembling and maintaining advanced mechanical systems that are crucial for the readiness of the Royal Navy’s fleet.
As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be at the heart of our operations, working in a dynamic, safety-critical environment. You will gain exposure to complex engineering challenges and collaborate with expert teams, fostering your career development and technical growth.
What you’ll do:
- Install, align, and assemble mechanical components to precise tolerances.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Operate workshop machinery and specialised tools safely and effectively.
- Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems.
- Conduct functional testing, leak detection, and pressure testing to verify performance.
What you’ll need:
- Proficiency in the maintenance and troubleshooting of hydraulic, pneumatic, rotating, and static mechanical systems, ideally with experience in a marine, nuclear, heavy mechanical, or industrial environment.
- Proficiency in laser alignment, vibration analysis, and system commissioning/decommissioning.
- A self-driven attitude with a strong commitment to career development and continuous improvement.
- Experience in mentoring apprentices and sharing technical knowledge with peers.
- Hold a time-served apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering/Fitting.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
