MMA Welder Opportunities

At Babcock, we are committed to creating a safe and secure world. As an MMA (Manual Metal Arc) Welder at the historic Devonport Royal Dockyard, you will play an integral part in major shipbuilding, submarine, and infrastructure projects.

What You'll Do:

  • Apply Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding to a variety of heavy-duty marine and structural components.
  • Work on submarines, surface ships, dockside infrastructure, and within controlled factory environments.
  • Operate welding and fabrication equipment to consistently high standards.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, procedures, and technical specifications from a welding perspective.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to meet stringent safety and performance targets.

What You'll Need:

  • Strong capability in MMA/Stick welding on heavy plate, structural steel, or marine-grade materials.
  • Experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, infrastructure, or large-scale construction environments.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical instructions.
  • Confident use of welding sets, fabrication tools, and general workshop equipment.
  • A desire to own and shape your career development journey.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Marine engineering background or experience on Royal Navy or commercial vessels.
  • Time-served trade apprenticeship in welding, fabrication, marine, or naval engineering.
  • Indentured Apprenticeship relevant to welding.
  • Level 3 Engineering or Modern Apprenticeship.
  • Level 2 Engineering qualification supported by significant practical experience.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Eligibility may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and residency.
