Painter - Royal Navy Submarines

Babcock is seeking a skilled Painter to join our team at Devonport Royal Dockyard, near Plymouth, Devon. You will be instrumental in safeguarding the future of the Royal Navy by maintaining the critical surfaces of submarines, directly contributing to their operational readiness and longevity.

About the Role

As a Painter, your primary responsibility will involve expert surface preparation and the application of protective coatings to submarines. This hands-on role demands precision and craftsmanship, ensuring the durability and integrity of naval assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out comprehensive surface preparation on bare substrates and existing coatings using systematic approaches.
  • Apply a range of protective coatings using techniques such as brush, roller, conventional spray, and airless spray.
  • Instal damage control markings on raised tallies.
  • Provide technical guidance to colleagues on painting techniques and procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organised working areas, ensuring equipment is protected.

Working Conditions:

Candidates must be prepared to work in radiological areas, confined spaces, be clean-shaven, work at height, and on scaffolding.

Working Hours & Patterns:

This is a full-time, permanent role working 35 hours per week. The position is based on-site at Devonport Royal Dockyard. There is an opportunity for Optimised Working Patterns (OWP), involving a 4-week shift cycle (day/back shift or day/night shift). Further details on OWP can be provided by the Recruitment Team.

Essential Experience:

  • Extensive experience in a marine, industrial, or commercial painting environment.
  • A strong understanding of surface preparation quality standards.
  • Familiarity with paint manufacturers’ technical and safety data sheets.
  • Proven skill in applying coatings in marine environments using various methods.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: NVQ Level 3 in Industrial / Marine / Painting / Decorating, OR NVQ Level 2 with a willingness to undertake further training.
  • Essential: ICATS certification.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance.
