This role is truly out of the ordinary, placing you within the Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, part of the Assurance Directorate. The INO Group provides crucial advice and regulatory interface on nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management, and ensures compliance with legal and contractual requirements.

Core Responsibilities:

• Conduct Independent Peer Review of safety documents, policy, methodology, strategy, and guidance documents, ensuring compliance with the Business Management System (BMS), Nuclear Site Licence, and MOD Authorisation.
• Examine the Site Safety Justification, including Plant Safety Cases, Modifications, Forward Action Plans (FAPs), and Concessions, against company safety principles, criteria, and standards. This involves assessing completeness, logic, and methodology.
• Present the findings of Peer Review to members of the Nuclear Safety Committee, as required and on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM).
• Manage the conduct of sub-contracted consultants performing external Peer Review, acting as lead assessor.
• Assist in formulating Independent Peer Review (IPR) strategy and policy to address emergent issues.
• Prepare Peer Review reports to required standards and timescales, ensuring their incorporation into the SCaNDS/IPR database and the Licensee’s documentation archive.

About the Role:

This is a full-time, permanent position working 35 hours per week. The role offers hybrid working arrangements, typically involving 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home.

Essential Experience:

• General experience of safety-related engineering in a high-hazard industry.
• Significant experience in safety analysis, preferably in a through-life support environment, including techniques such as Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and fault tree analysis.
• Experience in the development, management, and analysis of fault schedules and deriving safety functional requirements.
• Experience of authoring safety case claims, arguments, and evidence to demonstrate risk management and control.
• A thorough understanding of Naval Base infrastructure and detailed understanding of submarine engineering would be advantageous.

Qualifications:

• Degree in an appropriate Scientific or Engineering discipline.
• Chartered accreditation by an appropriate Professional Institution.
• NUC0793 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent).
• NUC0794 Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent).
• NUC0911 Introduction to Safety Engineering.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
