Principal Software Engineer (Control Systems)
Join BAE Systems and become a pivotal member of a team contributing to cutting-edge defence, aerospace, and security solutions. This role focuses on developing advanced control systems software for significant submarine engineering programmes, supporting national underwater superiority efforts.
You will be responsible for translating functional requirements into detailed software designs, ensuring rigorous testing, and overseeing the full engineering design lifecycle from concept to validation. The position demands a proactive, self-starting individual with a high degree of ownership, comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
Core Duties:
- Develop innovative, high-quality control systems software products in line with recognised industry standards.
- Collaborate within a multi-disciplined team, utilising a range of tools and programming languages (SCL, Ladder, CTRL) throughout the software development cycle.
- Assume responsibility for your work and that of others, offering technical guidance to support the development of junior team members.
- Lead assurance and review activities, ensuring all configuration, release, and documentation requirements are met according to relevant standards.
- Translate functional requirements into software designs, implement and test solutions, and manage the integration, configuration, release, and deployment of the product.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in Software Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Chartered status with a relevant professional institution or demonstrable competence aligned with chartered status.
- Knowledge of one or more software development lifecycles, such as Agile or the V-model.
- Experience with Siemens TIA Portal and/or WinCC OA.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g., IEC 61508-3, 61511, 62443, 61131) is advantageous.
This role is based in Barrow-In-Furness and offers hybrid and flexible working arrangements, to be discussed with your recruiter. Relocation support packages are available for eligible candidates.
