About the Role:
As a Senior Combat Systems Engineer within the Warship Technical Authority (WTA), you will provide essential engineering support to a variety of programmes and projects within Warship Support. This includes contributing to Royal Navy surface ship contracts, international naval support, and consultancy activities. You will be instrumental in delivering core service elements such as design change, technical assurance, material state and obsolescence management, specialist support, and future support planning.
You will also support technical leadership and broader systems engineering efforts, adhering to established training and people-management processes.
Core Duties:
- Provide combat systems engineering support across diverse platforms and programmes, including Combat Management Systems, sensors, effectors, networks, and weapons systems.
- Support assigned project(s) Principal and Senior Engineers, liaising with internal and external stakeholders such as the MOD, Overseas Navies, OEMs, and project teams.
- Assist in maintaining the integrity of systems design across various engineering contexts, including pan-class and cross-programme deployments.
- Support structured investigations, impact assessments, and integration analyses for assigned projects to facilitate evidence-based decision-making.
- Contribute to the safe and efficient implementation of platform systems design change by supporting configuration control and holistic integration.
- Assist in collating evidence for safety case maintenance and Naval Authority/Customer certification submissions.
- Support the WTA Combat Systems technical lead for assigned project(s) and the Service Hub.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of typical UK naval domains, with a background in combat systems, electrical engineering, or munitions.
- Understanding of defence and maritime standards applicable to the UK MOD and awareness of those for overseas customers.
- Sound understanding of the engineering lifecycle.
- Degree qualified or equivalent in Systems/Combat Systems/Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Commitment to working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The Warship Technical Authority (WTA) Service Hub, part of the Asset Management team within Warship Support, delivers comprehensive naval whole ship, systems, and equipment engineering support and change management.
This role is based at Portsmouth Naval Base & Portsmouth Broad Oak, with a hybrid working pattern of 3-4 days on site. We offer a range of flexible working arrangements, and encourage you to discuss options with your recruiter.
