About the Role:

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer – Mechanical (Propulsion) at BAE Systems, you will be instrumental in the successful commissioning of mechanical propulsion systems for the groundbreaking first-of-class Dreadnought submarines. Working within a stringent regulatory framework, your responsibilities will encompass ensuring the safe commissioning, testing, and operational readiness of these critical systems. You will foster strong collaborations with various engineering departments, build operations teams, the Royal Navy, and the Ministry of Defence to guarantee a compliant and effective delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute commissioning activities with paramount safety, adhering to company procedures and all legislative mandates.
  • Liaise effectively with Engineering, Build Operations, the Royal Navy, the Ministry of Defence, and other stakeholders to ensure safe and compliant project delivery.
  • Create, review, and maintain commissioning, design, and test documentation to the highest standards.
  • Provide mentorship and support to less experienced team members within your specialized field.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all commissioning activities in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent BAE Systems during crucial Factory Acceptance Tests, Contractors Sea Trials, and other offsite testing events, with potential for international travel.
  • Successfully deliver assigned commissioning tasks within agreed-upon timelines and quality benchmarks.

Your Expertise:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of mechanical system operation, with a preference for steam and condensate systems, lubricating oil systems, and cooling systems.
  • Proven experience in commissioning complex, heavy machinery such as diesel engines, turbo generators, or steam turbine plants.
  • Solid understanding of commissioning test equipment and associated test procedures.
  • Awareness of Nuclear Site Licence or Authorisation Conditions.
  • Familiarity with mechanical flushing, pressure testing, endurance testing, and system setting-to-work processes.
  • Ability to operate safely and effectively within a high-risk, highly regulated engineering environment.

About the Team:

You will be joining the Propulsion Mechanical Commissioning Team, which is tasked with commissioning the secondary propulsion plant for the first-of-class Dreadnought submarines. This programme is vital for the Royal Navy, securing the continuation of the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD). This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the UK's most significant and prestigious engineering initiatives, working alongside seasoned commissioning specialists.
