Role Description
As a Senior Engineer – Electrical Engineering (Control & Instrumentation), you will play a pivotal role in the development and assurance of requirements for cutting-edge submarine control systems. Your responsibilities will include shaping the design, integration, and validation of critical platform technologies, producing essential technical documentation, and defining hardware and software requirements to ensure solutions meet programme, safety, and performance standards.
Working within a specialist Control & Instrumentation team, you will contribute to SSNA platform development. You will leverage engineering tools and system databases to oversee interfaces and functionality, support verification activities, and ensure functional safety compliance according to IEC 61508/61511 standards, delivering innovative, high-integrity systems vital for next-generation submarines.
Core Duties:
- Develop and facilitate system requirements with clear acceptance criteria aligned to programme needs.
- Produce detailed design documentation, including diagrams, calculations, and technical justifications.
- Support Certificate of Design activities by preparing evidence and presenting technical arguments.
- Define hardware and software requirements, guiding suppliers on compliant control system solutions.
- Oversee system interfaces and deliver verification evidence for functional safety standards (IEC 61508/61511).
Essential Skills and Experience:
- A relevant engineering degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent), with progression towards professional registration.
- Proven ability to produce clear, structured technical reports throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Effective application of systems engineering principles in detailed environments, interpreting requirements and supporting technical solutions.
- Experience with system calculations, modelling, and evaluation to inform design strategies.
- Understanding of control systems, instrumentation theory (e.g. PID), or system architecture concepts.
- Knowledge of defence standards is beneficial for compliance in regulated programmes.
The Centralised Control and Instrumentation Team:
You will join a team of 16 engineers focused on the design and validation of critical SSNA control systems across hardware, software, and safety.
