Senior Flight Systems Engineer

As a Senior Flight Systems Engineer in Prestwick, you will be instrumental in the design, development, integration, and support of a wide array of aircraft systems, encompassing mechanical, electrical, and fluid domains. Your expertise will be crucial in areas such as landing gear, fuel systems, electrical power, crew escape, environmental control, thermal management, flight controls, and propulsion integration.

This role spans the entire engineering lifecycle, from initial concept and requirements capture through to detailed design, verification, qualification, production support, and in-service sustainment. You will collaborate extensively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, and customers to deliver innovative and reliable system solutions. The position is based in Prestwick with a hybrid working arrangement of 3 days per week onsite. BAE Systems offers a range of flexible working options, which will be discussed with the successful candidate.

Core Duties:

  • Perform and lead engineering activities across the full product lifecycle, including requirements capture, system design and development, modelling and analysis, testing, integration, qualification, and certification.
  • Develop, deliver, and support aircraft flight systems across a range of mechanical, electrical, and fluid system domains.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers, investigating and resolving engineering issues to ensure continued system performance and reliability.
  • Support manufacturing and build-line activities, delivering effective problem-solving and timely resolution of technical challenges.
  • Produce, review, and release high-quality engineering documentation and technical data in accordance with established standards, procedures, and programme requirements.
  • Utilise engineering analysis and modelling tools to assess system performance, validate designs, and support development activities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project stakeholders, customers, and suppliers to develop and implement effective engineering solutions.
  • Manage and prioritise multiple work packages across a variety of projects and aircraft platforms, ensuring delivery to quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Contribute to technical reviews, design assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives to support programme success and engineering excellence.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification and/or experience in a relevant STEM discipline, such as Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related scientific field.
  • Experience working within the aerospace industry or a similarly complex engineering or technology-focused environment.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience, with the ability to lead engineering teams and coordinate technical activities across projects.
  • Strong technical and analytical capability, with the ability to research, interpret, and apply system design data to complex engineering challenges.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to utilise specialist engineering tools and software.
  • Experience supporting the design, development, integration, testing, or certification of complex engineering systems.
  • Experience managing multiple engineering work packages across a range of projects and platforms.

The Flight Systems Engineering Team in Prestwick works on the development and support of critical aircraft systems for advanced military aircraft platforms. The team provides specialist engineering expertise across mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems for programmes including Typhoon, Tornado, Hawk, and F-35.
