The Role

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the delivery of mechanical design solutions and take ownership of complex tasks requiring high integrity engineering. You will manage challenging and unusual tasks, supporting numerous aircraft modifications and ship designs. You will guide teams in exploring problem spaces, generating hardware solutions, and will be responsible for leading and coordinating reviews and testing of these ideas.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Reviews: Guide subject matter experts at Design Reviews and hold pre-reviews. Chair Engineering reviews.
  • Delivery: Directly contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Technical: Provide expert advice or presentations to customers, stakeholders, and peers.
  • Governance: Manage quality assurance and authoring processes.

Essential Experience for the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • Experience designing technical hardware solutions, ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem-solving, precision tolerances, or specific domain knowledge.
  • Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts.
  • Ability to function independently on a day-to-day basis, providing guidance and advice to less experienced practitioners.
  • Deep understanding of budgets, group behaviour, patterns of behaviour, and using this knowledge to deliver to time, quality, and cost.
  • Experience with Hazard Identification, safety cases, and safety management systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles.

Essential Qualifications for the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or Product Design.

Working Hours & Location

This role is based at our Boscombe Down site, working 37 hours per week. A minimum average site attendance of four days per week is required. Compressed hours are available for a nine-day fortnight.
