Mechanical Engineer - Next Generation Sensors

Are you passionate about developing the future of defence technology? Leonardo is seeking innovative Mechanical Engineers to join our dynamic team, contributing to the creation of next-generation sensors. You will collaborate with some of the UK's leading engineers and scientists, tackling complex challenges and building on a legacy of industry-leading expertise.

This role offers a blend of on-site and remote working, with essential attendance at our Basildon facility as dictated by customer requirements. We encourage all team members to continuously enhance their technical skills in structural, thermal, and model-driven engineering aspects of mechanical engineering.

What You'll Do:

  • Ensure compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the entire Engineering Lifecycle, integrating product quality, safety, and reliability requirements.
  • Perform detailed mechanical engineering design, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies.
  • Create Manufacturing Data Packs compliant with BS8888, utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) appropriately.
  • Support and contribute to the resolution of technical investigations and design reviews, adhering to business and industry standards.
  • Engage in practical implementation through development builds and Design of Experiments.
  • Provide support during the introduction of new products into the Development/Production lifecycle.
  • Actively contribute to Work Package delivery, ensuring Quality, Schedule, and Cost objectives are met.

What You'll Bring:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience in Defence environments (Airborne, Naval).
  • Experience in mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or Electro-Optical (EO) products.
  • Proficiency in designing systems for 'harsh environments' (e.g., Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt Fog).
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools for mechanical design and development, ideally PTC Creo.
  • A structured and logical approach to problem-solving and issue investigation.
  • Understanding of Structural and Thermal Analysis data to inform design decisions.
  • Experience with various aspects of Design for X (DfX), including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration, and Sustainability.
