As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will play a crucial role in assuring the safety of some of the UK's most complex and innovative defence systems, focusing on software, digital, data-driven, and AI-enabled technologies. You will support the delivery of independent safety advice, assessments, and assurance activities across Defence Digital, Land, and Air programmes. Projects are predominantly software and data intensive, demanding a strong understanding of systems safety, data integrity, software assurance, and emerging technologies.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include leading safety engineering activities, developing safety cases and hazard assessments, directly engaging with defence customers and stakeholders, and providing technical leadership on complex programmes. You will work closely with software developers, systems engineers, and compliance teams to ensure safety requirements are understood, implemented, and evidenced throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading safety engineering activities across software, digital, and data-driven defence projects.
- Producing and reviewing safety artefacts including Safety Case Reports, Hazard Logs, and safety assessments.
- Applying safety analysis techniques such as FMEA, HAZOP, SWIFT, and Functional Failure Analysis.
- Providing independent safety advice to customers and supporting capability acceptance and certification activities.
- Mentoring junior engineers and providing technical oversight of project deliverables.
- Supporting business growth through technical input into bids and proposals.
Essential Experience:
- Proven experience in systems safety engineering on UK defence projects within one or more domains including Land, Air, Maritime, or Defence Digital.
- Experience producing safety artefacts such as Safety Cases, Hazard Logs, and safety arguments.
- Strong understanding of safety engineering principles and recognised safety analysis techniques.
- Experience engaging with customers and stakeholders, communicating complex technical information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple activities, and deliver to project deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation experience.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain SC Security Clearance.
- Professional registration (IEng/CEng) or working towards professional registration is desirable.

This role is based at our Bristol or Farnborough site, working 37 hours per week with hybrid working available. A minimum average site attendance of three days per week is expected. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be required.
